What is your favorite part about being a member of the club?
Erin: I enjoy meeting all the different people and realizing I’m not really a freak and that there is this little subculture of people that love exotic animals. It’s like an underground sort of culture. It’s nice to talk to other people who have the same passion for these critters since trying to talking to the people who don’t like them is like trying to explain brain surgery. I mean if you don’t get it, then you just don’t get it.
Robert: The people.

When did you get into the exotic pet hobby?
Erin: I have always been into odd animals, like herps, since I was little. I used to go on a toad catching adventure every summer at my nannys house. Then we’d catch eels when her yard would flood during the rainy season. I always had little pet anoles and garters that we’d let go. I got into frogs in middle school. It wasn’t until recently, I think May 2009, that I got into inverts. I’ve always had horrid arachnophobia, but I just got over it because my husband loved them so much. Thought I’d give them a try and bought him a curlyhair sling, and then the next day I decided I wanted my own, so we got an LP sling, and now we have more than we can remember now. Don’t get me wrong though, if I wake up to a bug crawling on me, I still don’t care much for that. I like them to stay in their habitats :D
Robert: I have always been interested in exotics. When I was 15 I had a cat spider that lived outside. I fed it huge grasshoppers, and it grew to the size of my fist. Then my stepdad killed it cause it freaked him out and he didn’t know it was my pet. I was never allowed to keep anything in our house.

What is your favorite animal and why?
Erin: That’s a toughie. I’ve always liked tigers, I don’t know why. But I’m also an oddball because I’ve always secretly like crocodilians and other herps.
Robert: I like so many I don’t have a favorite.

What is your least favorite animal and why?
Erin: I have to say I don’t like things that are pests, like wasps and ants and mosquitoes. But even though I don’t care for them, they are still important to the earth since everything needs to eat and they are an important part of the food chain. But I still don’t like them.
Robert: Right now our new puppy because he poops all over our floor lol.

What is the most unique animal you’ve kept?
Erin: I’d have to say a Vole. We were sledding down digital hill once and ran over this animal and hurt it. We smuggled it home in our coats until our mom found out, but she let us keep it. We did a lot of research and found out it was a vole. Cute little rodent with a bad attitude. We had him for several years.
Robert: I had a baby bat for a while. I had to get rid of him because my mom thought they randomly got rabies.

What is the #1 animal on your wishlist?
Erin: Oh man! I’d have to say a Dwarf Caiman! I love those cute lil buggers, and not just because they’re cute as babies, I think they are gorgeous animals and very fascinating. Sometimes I wonder if I’m insane to want a reptile that will be 4-5 feet of crocodilian attitude and power, but I think they’re amazing and I can’t wait until I have one. Only thing stopping me from getting one is their price tag honestly.

Realistically though I’d say a dog right now. We had one for a couple weeks that we had found and named her and everything since we didn’t think her owners would come forward. I got her checked for a chip and they found one, so we had to give her back. I’d like to find a miniature bull terrier, but no luck yet.
Robert: I have several right now.
-A giant mantis
-One of those giant isopods they found in England that are 2-3 feet long
-One of the ornamental tarantulas
-Mexican chicken eater tarantula, the one they claim is 15 inches.

Tell us your fondest/scariest/funniest/etc… pet story?
Erin: That’s probably when I acquired my red eared slider turtle. I know he’s not fancy or anything, but I’d never seen one. I go to louisiana to visit my relatives every summer since we moved to colorado, since I was 7. One year I was fishing and caught this little hatchling turtle. He was so tiny and cute I thought he’d make a great pet so I brought him back to colorado in my backpack in a butter dish. (mind u I was only 12, I don’t support the wild caught pet trade at all) When we brought him home, turned out he needed so much special care (uv lighting, filtration, etc..) that I didn’t know about. It was more of a life long lesson in “impulse pet acquiring” as I like to call it. Never again did I get an animal without researching it first. That turtle, Copernicus, is now 16 years old.
Robert: When we first moved into our new place I was watching tv while Erin was gone, and kept hearing these weird noises. The kids were asleep so I didn’t know what it was. I finally figured out it was the nile monitor that had gotten out again. He was in our chest freezer. I grabbed him and it was the first time I ever got to hold him. He felt like he was wearing a weird leather, lizard suit and the way he was twisting around, he was ridiculously strong. He tail whipped me before I got him back into his house. He’s like a lizard luchadore!

Where is one place you would most like to go on a field trip and why?
Erin: I’d love to go to Japan because I think it’s a beautiful place and we love the culture. But I’d also love to go to Australia to visit Steve Irwins zoo. I was going to be going there for an internship with him when I was in the zookeeping class at PPCC, but ended up not going, and now I really wish I had gone, and really regret making the decision not to go.
Robert: Would like to travel to Ang’kor Wat to see it and to be able to see all the reptiles in the area. And to also see the people there to see their culture, since they are a people dedicated to living in harmony with nature.

If you discovered a new animals species what would you name it?
Erin: Probably something in regards to my last name or someone important to me.
Robert: Would depend on what it was.

Tell us about your life outside of the hobby:
Erin: Been with my hubby for almost 8 years, love spending time with my family. Have 2 kids. Work at a dog daycare/boarding/training facility and love that. Hoping to have a dog soon.
Robert: Interested in working with animal hospital/clinic that works with exotics. Like to play guitar, read, draw, play world of warcraft (For the Horde! Lok’tar Ogar)

Anything you would like to tell us that we didn’t ask?
Erin: I feel really bad about having tarantulas “on hold” lol. I’ll get them soon I swear!
Robert: Not anything in particular, but if you want to know anything just ask me in person. You may not get an answer, but it doesn’t hurt to ask ;)

What is your favorite part about being a member of the club?
I enjoy conversing with fellow club members that have an energetic enthusiasm about arachnids.

When did you get into the exotic pet hobby?
I had a collection of insects, snakes, turtles and frogs since the age of 8.

What is your favorite animal and why?
My favorite is the Tarantula. The is a interesting as a pet, I like the various temperaments, and intelligence.

What is your least favorite animal and why?
There is no least favorite; all species have learned to adapt to the ever changing climate and conditions of the Earth. All are magnificent and valued.

What is the most unique animal you’ve kept?
A Wooly Monkey

What is the #1 animal on your wishlist?
A Goliath Pinktoe.

Tell us your fondest/scariest/funniest/etc… pet story?
When I was about 7 we had the 18 year ritual of the Cicada. I collected about 600 and put the in one of my dads empty 20 gallons fish tanks. I had the top covered with a storm window screen. Unfortunately while no one was home the cat knocked the screen off the fish tank. The Cicadas escaped and wandered throughout the house. Following this my dad said no more pets, this ban only lasted a week. My dads mom told me that my father did the same when he was my age. After a week went by my dad bought me a grass snake. Both my dad and I are of the same mold.

Where is one place you would most like to go on a field trip and why?
I would like to go to Australia. Locally any weekend field trip would be exciting.

If you discovered a new animals species what would you name it?
I haven’t gave this much thought, I guess if I discovered a new Tarantula species I’d probably name it Aphonopelma girardei

Tell us about your life outside of the hobby:
I work for a large Engineering/Construction company. My average residence is about 3 ½ years per project. I like to ride my Harley, going to Sturgis and having long weekend camping trips on my Harley, if not the Harley I like to camping on the rivers during my kayak trips.

Anything you would like to tell us that we didn’t ask?
Considering all the moves that I have had over the last 15 years, 13 moves, I really enjoy living in Colorado especially on the front range. I plan to keep my house here in Colorado when I go to my next job, hopefully I’ll return to this area.

My hobby is one of the main talking points by my co-workers at work. Many employees bring their kids, wives, husbands and neighbors over to see my collections. I enjoy sharing the collection and especially enjoy educating folks that are terrified of spiders and Tarantulas. The outcome of their visits is very enlightening, 99% of all visitors leave with a positive perception of Tarantulas and Spiders.

What is your favorite part about being a member of the club?
My favorite part would have to be getting to meet and talk with people who aren’t freaked out and appalled by the same creatures I love and am fascinated by. Also getting to see monster roseas, catching H macs, and holding pythons is fun!

When did you get into the exotic pet hobby?
Wow, a long time ago. My first pets (besides any critter that happened to walk in front of me as a little kid) were black widows. Haha, I remember i used to keep them set up in little cups in my bathroom. Mom loved that…

What is your favorite animal and why?
Favorite animal? Which class are we talking about?! If you give me a class, I’ll name you a favorite animal from it, but there are many many animals I love. Too many “favorites.” And sorry, I know that’s kind of a lame answer.

What is your least favorite animal and why?
Mosquitoes. They kill more people than any other animal, they carry nasty stinkin diseases, to me they serve no discernible purpose to this world other than to be eaten (which is lame), they make bug hunts and normal outdoor activities miserable, the stupid candles that supposedly repel them (which by the way never work…) smell awful, that buzzing sound right in your ear canal can send a person through the roof, the only way they can reproduce is by using MY BLOOD, they carry bot fly larvae (which are the most disgusting things ever- google bot fly larvae *barf*), and last but not least- I’m allergic and swell instantly with mosquito bites. Stupid mosquitoes…

What is the most unique animal you’ve kept?
Although not too interesting to many, the exotic widows were probably most unique to me. Latrodectus: pallidus, tredecimguttatus, hasselti, etc. It’s fun (to me) to keep widows from all parts of the world. Not many people have them. Oh- and maybe a rattlesnake someday ;)

What is the #1 animal on your wishlist?
This is another hard one. It might have to be a wolf though. Wolves (properly trained) can be great pets. They are extremely intelligent. I always thought it would be awesome to walk my wolf as other people are walking their little dogs. Just something unique and different. It would always be a conversation starter too!

Tell us your fondest/scariest/funniest/etc… pet story?
Ever been to Glacier National Park (aka Grizzly bear central) and hiked at night?! Blacklighting for scorpions is also TONS of fun, especially when you find hundreds! :)

Where is one place you would most like to go on a field trip and why?
The amazon. Seems you can’t walk anywhere without finding weird bugs/critters of all kinds. But- if it was an underwater field trip- it would have to be the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. I love to snorkle/scuba (some day). There is so much to see and do in tropical reefs- especially the GBR.

If you discovered a new animals species what would you name it?
I would like to discover the world’s largest species of widow- one that grows to like, 6-9?. That would be crazy. As for a name, I don’t know, maybe Latrodectus widowmanii :)

Tell us about your life outside of the hobby:
Nothing too interesting. Just got married to my high school sweetheart. Also just graduated with a B.S. in Biology and I am currently looking to get a Masters in Biology/Chemistry or something. Looking to get a “real job” but currently working at the best steakhouse in the Springs (come visit me).

Anything you would like to tell us that we didn’t ask?
Don’t think so! I love camping and love doing field trips (Bell can attest- Arches, Ramah, etc) but usually don’t have much time to do them. Heck, if I had the time, I would be constantly outside looking for things!

What is your favorite part about being a member of the club? I really enjoy meeting new people who are appreciative of the varied forms of life on this planet, especially when that life form is an arachnid! I also love to see new and unusual pets that are brought when there is a meeting!

When did you get into the exotic pet hobby? I am relatively new to the hobby, about three years. I lived in Arizona most of my childhood and grew up in Tucson, so I was exposed to all kinds of critters. Never had much fear of them. (not even Gila monsters! Thought they were so cool!) Tarantulas always fascinated me.

What is your favorite animal and why? My favorite animal…hmmm…. Well as far as ARTHROPODS are concerned, Mygalomorphs! As far as other animals, I like crows, ravens, hummingbirds, moths and butterflies, elephants, lobsters. Bats fascinate me as well.

What is your least favorite animal and why?
Dogs. Can’t stand them. Partly because of the trauma I endured as a five year old with having to go through nine days of rabies shots the size of horse shots! The dog could not be located so to be safe my sister and I had to go through the shot procedure. Interestingly, my sister LOVES dogs.

What is the most unique animal you’ve kept? A less than two week old Steller’s blue jay that was blown from the nest and abandoned by his mother.

What is the #1 animal on your wishlist? I think it would be awesome to have a BLUE lobster! If I had room and a BIG yard, an elephant would be too cool!

Tell us your fondest/scariest/funniest/etc… pet story? I would have to say that the fondest memory was when I took care of and nursed the little baby blue jay. I bonded with him in a way that I never had with an animal up until that time.

Where is one place you would most like to go on a field trip and why? Hmmm…. Well I lived in Arizona for a large part of my childhood, so that would be kind of boring unless there were Aphonopelmas to be had!! Tough to answer this one.

If you discovered a new animals species what would you name it? I would love to discover another rare species of tarantula. Some extremely colorful one. Oh geez, I am not all that good at those scientific latin names! hehe

Tell us about your life outside of the hobby: Well…I love to go shopping! Love to go find odd vintage collectibles and antique furniture.
